Title: Chosen aspects of modern perioperative care in patients operated for morbid obesity

Abstract:

Introduction Novel perioperative care protocols, such as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) have been implemented with success in various surgical fields, including bariatric surgery. Modern perioperative care focuses on introducing a dozen elements that combined decrease the perioperative trauma allowing for hastened recovery. Aim The main aim of the study is an assessment of the utility and safety of ERAS protocol in bariatric surgery, assessment of the usefulness of the Edmonton Obesity Staging System for patient qualification. The next goal is an analysis of how the procedure type affects the recovery parameters and how compliance with the protocol affects treatment results. Material and methodology To assess the first aim a systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. The remaining study goals were reached by analysis of patients operated for morbid obesity. Results summary Modern perioperative care protocols in patients operated for morbid obesity are safe and allow for a shorter length of hospital stay. Edmonton Obesity Staging System allows for a more complex assessment of patients prior to qualification, however, the full assessment of its usefulness requires further research. Type of surgery has an influence on postoperative recovery following weight loss surgery. Compliance with the protocol affects short-term outcomes, decreasing the risk of compli ; cations.
