The aim of the presented research was to investigate the character of the functioning of theory of mind, empathy and emotional conscience amongst patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder. During the analyzes the type of diagnosed disease, its episode and the severity of symptoms were taken into account. The study involved 131 people in total: 44 individuals with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (13 in episode of depression, 16 in hypomania and 15 in euthymia), 33 individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder (18 in depression and 15 in remission) and 54 individuals constituting the control group. To measure the functioning of theory of mind the Reading Mind in the Eyes Test was used. Empathy was measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the Empathy Quotient scale. Assessment of tendency to experience various moral emotions was made by using the Moral Feeling Scale. In the study, it was observed that patients with mood disorders have some deficits in reading mental states and that they describe themselves as less prone to fantasize empathically than healthy controls. In the case of susceptibility to experience various moral emotions, differences between the group of patients and the control group were also noted. It has been shown that the level of empathy and functioning of emotional conscience depend on the type of disease and its episode. It turned out that for these two variables, the severity of symptoms was also significant.
