Title: Influence of autoimmunity on endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis development in young patients with coronary artery disease and in systemic lupus erythematosus patients


The doctoral dissertation consists of three publications concerning a relationship between autoimmune process and endothelial dysfunction, prothrombotic activity and presence of atherosclerotic lesions. The most significant findings of the writing: (1) autoimmune process influences endothelial activation/ damage and prothrombotic activity. This relationship was assessed by comparing levels of major groups of antiphospholipid antibodies with selected markers of endothelial dysfunction and prothrombotic activity, in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (2) in young patients without overt autoimmune disease, with angiographically significant coronary artery atherosclerosis increased autoimmune activity was observed. The intensity of autoimmune process, assessed by the level of antiphospholipid antibodies, was higher than in healthy volunteers. Perhaps the level of antiphospholipid antibodies may be used as an additional cardiovascular risk factor (3) statin therapy influences autoimmune process and a level of antiphospholipid antibodies more relevantly in patients with clinically significant atherosclerosis than in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in stable clinical condition. It was observed irrespectively to decrease of inflammation, which was present in both groups on hypolipemic treatment.
