Title: Delirium post-stroke : prevalence, risk factors, and it’s subtypes in patients in acute phase of stroke : long term prognosis of patients with post-stroke delirium

Abstract:

The aim of our first study was to assess the prevalence of delirium in patients with acute phase of stroke and to build a predictive model for delirium and subsyndromal poststroke delirium. Delirium occurs in one-fourth of admission due to stroke, subsyndromal delirium is less prevalent and affects less than one per ten patients. The hyperactive form is the most rare type of delirium. The aim of second study was to asssess the frequency of post-stroke delirium subtypes iand build their predictive models. Out of 750 patients 203 had delirium, 85 were hypoactive, 77 were mixed hypoactive-hyperactive, 31 were hyperactive and 10 had an unspecified type. The aim of third study was to assess the natural history of post-stroke delirium in a large cohort of patients with stroe. Delirium usually develops at the beginning of hospitalization. The aim of fourth stydy was to determine the prognostic significance of delirium for functional status, nursing home admission and mortality of patients with delirium assessed 3 and 12 months after stroke. Patients with delirium were discharged to another hospital or nursing home significantly more often than those presenting without delirium.
