Title: Relationship between the deficit of hip extension and the body posture and the low back pain


Introduction: The assessment of the range of motion in the hip joints is important among people with low back pain (LBP), because the movement in the hip joints influences the position and mobility of the lumbar spine by affecting the position of the pelvis.Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the deficit of extension in the hip joint and local and global traits of body posture and low back pain among young people.Material and methods: The study was conducted among a group of 62 women aged 22-29 years. To the evaluation of spine were used questionnaires: a modified Nordic Pain Questionnaire, VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) and Oswestry questionnaire. The range of motion of flexion and extension in the hip joints was assessed using a digital inclinometer (Baseline). One test was carried out to assess the extent of flexion and three tests assessing the extent of the extension. Local and global posture indicators were determined on the base of digital photos in Kinovea computer program (0.7.10). Results: In the group of people with deficit of hip joint extension back pain was significantly more frequent compared to the group with no deficyt of hip extension (p=0.001). A negative linear correlation was demonstrated between the femoral-pelvic angle in the standing and kneeling position and the angle of inclination of the body, pelvic tilt and distances of ; the ear, femoral trochanter and knee from the line of gravity. Conclusions: There is a relationship between the deficit of hip extension and back pain in the examined group.The evaluation of central body posture control and subsequent improvement of this type of control may be crucial to improve the postural control system and lower back pain management.
