Title: Factors affecting the course, prognosis and recurrence of the lower limb erisipelas

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between selected laboratory and clinical parameters assessed at an early stage of infection and the severity of the course of erysipelas of the lower limb. In addition, the analysis of associated diseases, including vein thrombosis of the lower limb, in patients hospitalized due to lower limb erysipelas has been conducted. The retrospective study included 500 patients hospitalized in 2006-2015 due to lower limb erysipelas at the Clinical Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital in Krakow. Hypertension, diabetes and obesity are the most common comorbidities in patients hospitalized for lower limb erysipelas, while lower limb vein thrombosis is found in a small percentage of patients. Analysis of independent risk factors for a more severe course of erysipelas showed, among others, that risk factors related to more severe erysipelas course expressed in the number of specialist external consultations were: duration of elevated temperature, glucose and urea concentration. Patients with recurrent erysipelas were characterized by significantly higher BMI, more frequent diabetes mellitus, and more frequent declared hypersensitivity to penicillin.
