Title: The impact of the air pollution by particulate matter PM10 and PM2,5 on the health of the adult residents of Cracow

Abstract:

Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to make the public aware of the degree of pollution, its sources and to present the dependence of the disease on the individual components of smog and the season. The influence on adults and seniors in particular age groups is also presented. The influence of particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5 fractions on human organism was investigated, more precisely on exacerbation of ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma, as well as on the occurrence of infections of the respiratory tract, heart rhythm disorders and ischemic stroke. Material and method: On the basis of the presented research objective, the main research problem was formulated: how the increased concentrations of two fractions of particulate matter: PM10 and PM2,5 affect the course of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases after 7 days of exposure to polluted air. The research was carried out in the city of Kraków. Taking into account the regionalisation of the University Hospital, the study covered a significant part of the city and the localities near Kraków. The study included data from 5 years, i.e.2012-2017, starting from 1 November 2012 until the end of February 2017. This period is divided into periods: 2-month summer periods and 4-month and 5-month winter periods. The study group co ; nsists of internist patients suffering from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The control group consisted of surgical patients with abdominal ailments: abdominal pain, acute abdomen and diarrhea. The correlation between the average concentrations from 7 day spreceding the disease and the 3-day average number of register ed emergency calls was analyzed. Average concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 dusts calculated on the basis of data obtained from the Provincial Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. Readings from Kraków measurement stations: Krasickiego Avenue and Kurdwanów were used. Information on the emergency department came from the database of the computer system of the University Hospital. Pearson's correlation was used in statistical analysis. The study included data from 874 days of observation, during which 14405 patients were diagnosed with SOR due to the above mentioned diseases. The study group included 6353 persons, 4823 persons in the winter control group and 3229 persons in the summer control group. ; Results: Statistical results showed a positive correlation between variables. 93% of the correlation coefficients (R) calculated in the study group were in the range of 0.23 - 0.52. They were statistically significant – p <0.05. In the control groups the R coefficient ranged from -0.45 to 0.1 and only one result was statistically significant with p <0.05. Thu ; s, it was confirmed that the concentration of particulate matter in creases the number of exacerbations of chronic diseases and sudden acute respiratory and circulatory diseases. Summary: The results of the study confirmed the impact of air pollution-particulate matter on the number of cases. The value of particulate matter concentration is reflected in the number of patients admitted to emergency department in winter.
