Title: Adaptation and application of EORTC tools in patients with gastric and oesophageal cancer and in patients with bone metastates

Abstract:

HRQoL (health-related quality of life) is recognized as a primary endpoint in clinical trials as well as a valuable parameter to be assessed in patients with cancer metastatic disease during systemic treatment. Research regarding HRQoL is conducted with the use of questionnaires. The procedures for their development, standardisation, and translation are clearly defined. EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) supports construction and adaptation of reliable and valid tools for HRQoL assessment. QLQ-BM22 created for patients with bone metastases and QLQ-OG25 used in patients with oesophago-gastric malignancies are examples of such instruments. In the first part of the project psychometric validation of EORTC modules QLQ-BM22 and QLQ-OG25 together with its core questionnaire QLQ-C30 was conducted. The instruments were approved as valid and reliable for the assessment of HRQoL in these populations. In the second part of the study the main factors influencing the subjective evaluation of HRQoL by patients in the study groups and the most important HRQoL issues affecting patients in the study groups were estimated. In patients with bone metastases the most significant HRQoL issues were fatigue, pain, and insomnia. Among patients with gastric and oesophageal cancer fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, appetite and weight loss were the main problems.
