Title: Comparison of ultrasound techniques in the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque stability in carotid arteries

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to compare the usefulness of various ultrasound imaging techniques - B-Mode and VAUS - in the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque stability in carotid arteries.62 patients were included to the study; at an age 55 – 86 years (average 67. 4 years), including 39 men and 23 women. Patients with post- CVA laesions in the brain were examined.The following patients were excluded: with cardiac abnormalities, immeurances, arterial stenosis and patients with hemodynamically significant carotid artery stenosis.The study protocol included USG B-Mode, CF mode, VAUS and CEUS. The study was approved by the Bioethics Committee.During the study, no statistically significant differences in the classification of plaques for GWN classes in 2D and 3D tests were found . A statistically significant difference in the classification to subgroups depending on the regularity of the plaque surface was found.Irrespective of the ultrasound technique used, correct morphological evaluation of the atherosclerotic plaque: echogenicity and continuity of the surface, as well as its possible vascularization – the presence of neovascularization – allows the determination of atherosclerotic plaque instability.
