Abstract:

Introduction: This monography consists of three publications concerning the problem of extracorporeal rewarming of patients with severe accidental hypothermia.Materials and methods: Hypothermic patients from Malopolska region referred to and treated by Severe Hypothermia Treatment Centre in John Paul II Hospital in Cracow from July 2013 until present.Results and conclusions: All of the selected articles present the innovative model of management of hypothermic patients devised in Severe Hypothermia Treatment Centre, that enables immediate qualification for extracorporeal rewarming in patients meeting inclusion criteria. All collected data has been retrospectively analyzed and the outcome of patients with severe accidental hypothermia treated with extracorporeal rewarming has been presented. Addressing all problems and pitfalls encountered during qualification for such treatment, an analysis has been prepared summing up all possible draw backs in decision making. Managed group of patients has been assessed also for the incidence of complications of extracorporeal rewarming with ECMO system, in particular complications that are hypothermia specific.
