Tytuł: Assessment of the quality of life of patients after enucleation ofthe eyeball due to uveal melanoma
Abstrakt:
Enucleation is one of the methods of treatment of uveal melanoma. During operation, the orbital implant may be implanted. After operation, it is necessary to attach a prosthesis to the orbit. Glass and acrylic (epi)prostheses are available. The main aim of the study was to assess the quality of life (QoL) of patients after enucleation of the eyeball due to uveal melanoma. A total of 212 patients were qualified, two groups were distinguished: with orbital implants (68.4%) and without orbital implants (31.6%). The study consisted of three parts: a questionnaire (EORTC questionnaires: QLQ-C30 (version 3.0) and QLQ-OPT30 (with EORTC approval) were used and additional questions were asked), a clinical study (data from the patients’ history of disease) and a photographic session (of the eye and (epi)prosthesis in 5 directions). Patients assessed their global health status and QoL as average. Some scales of QoL of patients with implant were better. Older age and shorter time after enucleation lowered the level of QoL. Men and people with a higher level of education had higher levels of QoL. Patients assessed their postoperative cosmetic effect to be high. Both glass and acrylic (epi)prostheses were well evaluated by patients. The general objective assessment of the cosmetic effect was higher in the group with implant. No important relationship between the general subjective and genera ; l objective assessment of the effect was found. With the increase of the general subjective assessment of the effect some scales of QoL improved. Patients after enucleation should be provided with multidisciplinary care focused on a high QoL.
