Title: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in data of the Emergency Department of the Regional Hospital in Kielce and the Outpatient Nephrology Clinic of the University Hospital in Cracow

Abstract:

CKD can be diagnosed on average in 10% of the world’s population. It’s important to have precise methods to assess GFR. Aim of the studyTo evaluate the usefulness of the abbreviated MDRD and the CKD-EPI formula in GFR estimating in patients of the Emergency Department in Kielce, and the usefulness of the Bjornsson’s, the abbreviated MDRD and the CKD-EPI formula in GFR assessment in patients of the Outpatient Nephrology Clinic in Cracow. Material The study group consisted of 1452 patients of the ED in Kielce and 882 Outpatient Nephrology Clinic patients in Cracow. Results In the ED patients eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73m2 was found in 32.6% (MDRD) and 34.6% (CKD-EPI). There was a good correlation between the formulas in higher stages of CKD.A good correlation in estimating GFR was found between the abbreviated MDRD and CKD-EPI formula in all patients of the Outpatient Nephrology Clinic in Cracow. The Bjornsson's formula gave an increase in the number of patients in early stages of CKD, especially in the younger group. Conclusions The incidence of CKD in patients of the ED in Kielce is higher than in the world. The CKD-EPI equation and abbreviated MDRD formula have a similar value in estimating GFR in higher stages of CKD. The Bjornsson's formula may increase eGFR in its lower values. There is no need to convert an abbreviated MDRD formula to CKD-EPI equation when eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73m2.
