Title: Anti-retinal antibodies in sera from patients with diabetic retinopathy

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to enrich the knowledge about the role of autoantibody-related autoimmunity in the evolution of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The occurrence of retina specific autoantibodies in sera from patients with DR and their association with patients’ clinical characteristics were evaluated. With the use of indirect immunofluorescence the presence and levels of anti-retinal antibodies (ARA) in 61 sera from patients with different stages of DR and 30 sera from age-matched controls were examined. The highest incidence and intensity of immunofluorescence was noted in the layer of the photoreceptor outer segments. The incidence and sera levels of ARA were changing depending on the stage of DR and depending on the presence of clinical features of DR such as cystoid macular oedema (CMO), neovascularization of the retina (NVE), attributes of preproliferative retinopathy and symptoms of extreme retinal ischemia (diagnosed on the basis of extensive fibrovascular proliferation of the optic disc and neovascularization of the iris accompanied by broad capillary nonperfusion areas within the whole retina in fluoroangiography, and the lack of CMO and NVE in both eyes). The results of the study suggest that autoantibody-related autoimmune response may be an important factor of the photoreceptor damage in the pathogenesis of DR.
