Title: Assessment of oral health in pregnant women with diabetes

Abstract:

The aim of the study was an evaluation of the oral health status, the level of metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and certain antioxidants in non-stimulated saliva in the consecutively recruited women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), type 1 diabetes (T1D) and pregnant women without diabetes (controls). Additionally, the study aimed to compare and determinate the relationship between clinical and biochemical parameters as above. The study groups included 35 patients with GDM, 30 with T1D and 39 controls. The health status of hard tissues and activity of antioxidants in saliva were similar in the examined groups. Healthy gums and teeth were most frequently observed in the controls. In pregnant women with any diabetes the following observations were noticed: worse gums health, deeper periodontal pockets and greater alveolar bone structure loss. In T1D worse hygiene and higher concentration of MMP-9 were observed as compared to controls. In all the examined groups, patients with periodontitis had a higher level of MMP-9 than patients without it. Independent determinants of periodontitis were oral hygiene and MMP-9 concentration. Concentration of MMP-9 assessment, indicated it as potentially good predictor of periodontitis.
