The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and gastroprotective properties of zinc have been documented by a number of studies, but their clinical use is still limited. At the same time, extensive searches for new, more effective and safer anti-inflammatory drugs are being conducted. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of zinc ions on the anti inflammatory activity of ketoprofen, ibuprofen and naproxen, while assessing gastric mucosal irritation after acute and chronic administration of zinc hydroaspartate along with NSAIDs, as well as synthesized complexes of Zn-ibuprofen and Zn-naproxen. The results of the study confirmed the anti inflammatory properties of zinc ions and the validity of their preventive supplementation in the course of inflammatory processes and during NSAID treatment. The protective effect of zinc on gastric mucosa after ketoprofen, ibuprofen and naproxen was also demonstrated. In view of the above results, zinc supplementation during NSAID therapy may allow for the reduction of the effective dose of the parent drug thereby limiting its gastrointestinal side effects.
