Title: Frontal dysfunctions in neuropsychological differential diagnosis of early dementia syndromes

Abstract:

Objective The subject of this study is an evaluation of the relationship between dementias of different aetiology and cognitive symptoms, especially executive functions (EF). The study aims to present characteristics and to compare the level of executive functions in patients with different early dementive syndromes, i.e. to demonstrate intergroup (different-aetiology dementias vs. post-traumatic frontal brain injuries) differences in cognitive functioning.Material and MethodsThe subjects were specially selected clinical groups divided into four study groups according to the applying eligibility criteria. 110 patients with suspected early dementia of different aetiology were finally included in the study: 29 patients with Parkinson’s Disease with Dementia, 33 patients with Alzheimer’s Dementia, 28 patients with Vascular Dementia, 20 patients with post-Traumatic Frontal lobe Syndrome. All patients underwent specialist neurological diagnostics and neuroimaging, i.e. CT or MRI. Neuropsychological examination was performed by means of the mini-mental skills examination (MMSE), Beck scales, and tests mainly exploring executive functions. All statistics were carried out using IBM SPSS 23 Statistics. Results and ConclusionsThe obtained results suggest that the most efficient tests to detect dysfunctions in early dementia are the clock-drawing test and the ROCF test, with the Stroop Tes ; t and the Fluency Test close behind. The results of this study also allow to make cognitive functioning profiles of individual clinical groups, which seems to be very important from the practical, clinical perspective.
