The overall objective of the research presented in this paper was to deepen the knowledge about the motivation to choose the nursing profession among students who make a decision to do this job. Within such a broad general objective, the following research problems have been formulated:1. What is the motivation to choose the nursing profession that occur among the people who start nursing education and what is the proportion of pro-social motives in relation to the motives of self-centered nature?2. Whether and to what extent the selected factors, such as a conscious and voluntary character of the decision to choose the profession, knowledge about the profession, the perception of the nursing profession image, empathy, a sense of coherence and the value system are associated with pro-social motivation to choose nursing education?3. What changes in the nature and intensity of motivation to practice the profession are observed during the consecutive years of nursing education?4. What changes in relation to the selected psychosocial factors: the perception of the nursing profession image, the level of empathy, the level of a sense of coherence and the hierarchy of values system are observed during the consecutive years of nursing education?5. Does the nature of motivation to practice as a nurse influence the assessment of the choice pertinence made during the subsequent years of e ; ducation in nursing?, The study was longitudinal in nature and consisted of three successive stages: 2012 - stage I, 2013- stage II and 2014 – stage III. The study was conducted at the beginning of each new academic year, in the same group of 196 students of nursing faculties (full-time first degree courses, at four universities in the region of Malopolska). The study used diagnostic survey method and the following research tools: an original questionnaire, the original Scale of Motivation to Choose the Nursing Profession and Nursing Education, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index by M. H. Davis, the Orientation Questionnaire (SOC 13) and the List of Personal Values by Z. Juczyński. On the basis of the conducted research it has been found that:The predominant motivation of choosing education in nursing among the surveyed students was pro-social. Among pro-social motives, the ones of typically altruistic character were manifested with the highest intensity. The students whose decision to do a degree in nursing was made consciously and independently had more knowledge about the nursing profession before they started education in nursing, they had a more positive image of the nursing profession and manifested higher intensity of motivation aimed at the welfare of others. Moreover, they had a higher level of empathy in the subscales of empathic concern and perspective-taking, and the ; y had a higher sense of coherence accompanying altruistic motivation to choose nursing education. The study showed no connection of the high position of pro-social values in the value system of the respondents and the motivation to choose the nursing profession.The predominant motivation to practice as a nurse in the consecutive years of nursing education proved to be pro-social. The highest intensity of pro-social motivation to practice the profession was demonstrated during the second year of the course and, although it decreased during the third year of the course, it was still higher than that presented in the first year.The perception of the image of the nursing profession during the consecutive years of the course became progressively more negative, and the level of empathy was decreasing, which has become particularly evident in the difference between the second and the third year of the course. On the other hand, the level of global sense of coherence and its components - a sense of clarity and a sense of resourcefulness increased in the subsequent years of education. The importance of pro-social values in the value system of the surveyed students decreased in the consecutive years of the course.Students who were motivated pro-socially to choose education in nursing often confirmed the pertinence of their choice in the following years of their education. The strength of ; the relationship between pro-social motivation to choose the profession and the positive assessment of the pertinence of the choice to do a degree in nursing increased with the progress of nursing education.
