Title: The assessment of the effectiveness of selected methods ofdiagnosing damage to knee joint medial meniscus in relationto the medial collateral ligament release procedure

Abstract:

The aim of the study is the assessment of the diagnostic value of the clinical test, ultrasound test, and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of damage to menisci. The assessment of the actual condition of the meniscihas been made during knee joint arthroscopy. The purpose of the analysis conducted has been to prove that an MRI increases both the awareness during surgery and the intraoperativere cognisability of meniscus damage, the damage to the back edge of medial meniscus in particular, by means of performing the joint release procedure inselected cases. The retrospective analysis was performed in the cases of122 patients who underwent knee joint arthroscopy because of beingprimarily diagnosed with damage to medial meniscus. In the patient groupwhere MRI was performed, in case the MRI indicated medial meniscusdamage and no damage was found in the subsequent arthroscopy, therelease procedure of medial collateral ligament was performed in order toobtain a better vision of the back edge of medial meniscus that usually remains unseen in a standard arthroscopy. MRI tests have the highestsensitivity among the diagnostic methods applied to the patients withsuspected medial meniscus damage. The author’s own study has indicatedthat as long as meniscus was found to be damaged in MRI and the releaseprocedure was performed during the arthroscopy, the diagnosis of the damage was ; successful in 100% of the cases. The analysis of the study indicates that MRI, with its highest sensitivity, should be a decisive factor for the planned knee arthroscopy being performed with the application of the medial collateral ligament release procedure.
