Title: Occurence of urinary tract infections and physical functioning of patients after stroke

Abstract:

The main objective of the study was to assess the relationship between the occurrence of UTI and physical functioning in patients after stroke and the relationship between prevalence of UTI and results of rehabilitation in patients after stroke.Studied group consisted of patients after stroke who were rehabilitated in the stationary Department of Neurological Rehabilitation ORNR "Krzeszowice" in Krzeszowice, discharged between 01.01.2012 and 31.12.2014.An observational case-control study was conducted, with a natural selection to the study groups according to the prevalence of UTI. UTI was a frequent complication in patients admitted to a stationary neurological rehabilitation. UTI was more frequent in women and in the elderly, and was associated with history of haemorrhagic stroke, right-sided location of stroke, coexistence of diabetes mellitus. UTI was more frequent in patients who started stationary neurological rehabilitation within 30 days from discharge after a stroke, and was prevalent in almost all (97%) of patients with a catheter placed permanently in urinary bladder. There was no association found between UTI and number of strokes, aphasia, depression, dementia, hypertension and cohabitation with family or other persons. In comparison to patients without UTI, patients with UTI had limited physical functioning at admission and at discharge from stationary neurologica ; l rehabilitation ward. Disparities at discharge could be explained by differences in initial state, as prevalence of UTI was not associated with physical functioning at discharge after adjustment for initial status and other confounders. Improvement of physical functioning in patients with UTI was more dynamic during stationary neurological rehabilitation.
