Tytuł: The effects of vitamin D and its metabolites on the mineral balance, blood pressure and parameters of the vascular wall
Abstrakt:
The study aimed to explore factors influencing vitamin D levels in the general population of southern Poland; the vitamin D and its metabolite – calcitroic acid (CA) levels in relation to blood pressure, structure and function of large arteries. 303 adult members of two-generation families have been re-invited for the examination. The measurements of CA have been done at the Department of Medical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jagiellonian University Medical College, using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer analysis. Multivariate regression analysis, with adjustments applied for age, sex, body mass index, use of antihypertensive drugs, smoking and alcohol intake, revealed several positive relationships between the inputted data. In our study population, ratio of the daily excretion of calcitroic acid in the urine to serum vitamin D concentration showed a positive association with systolic blood pressure. The carotid intima-media thickness and ankle-brachial index showed a positive relationship with the urinary CA excretion. Serum 25(OH)D concentration and 24-hour urinary CA excretion demonstrated correlations with the mineral balance, parameters of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and inflammatory markers. Moreover, in the study population of Krakow region, older age and the month of blood sampling were associated with higher, while b ; ody mass index and body fat with lower serum vitamin D concentrations. The analysis indicated that the vitamin D deficiency in the population of the southern Poland is common. The results of the research project may prove useful in continuing the search for pathophysiological mechanisms of hypertension in the future.
