Abstract:

Introduction: The state of the tissues of stomatognathic system affects all the basic functions of human life, which include nutrition, speech and interpersonal contacts.Aim: The aim was to compare the health awareness and self-care with the actual state of the teeth and periodontal tissues among patients of Cracow district.Materials and Methods: A group consisted of 408 patients admitted to the Dental Clinic in Nowa Góra and Central Dental Dispensary UKS in Krakow. The study included an assessment of API, GBI, CPITN and DMFT. Patients also completed a questionnaire of lying scale and a second about the habits of hygiene and health awareness.Results: The majority of the respondents (54.91%) reported to the dentist once a year or more frequently. 46.57% used mouth rinse and 30.15% dental floss. Patients evaluated their oral hygiene as satisfactory (3.07 on a scale of 0 to 5).The average score of DMFT was 17.99 and 25.14 for SCI. Dental caries frequency reached 74.75%. The average score of API was 51.96% and 27.93% for GBI. Among the study population 7.35% had CPI = 0, 19.36% CPI = 1, 23.04% CPI = 2, 18.38% CPI = 3 and 26.23% CPI = 4. The average score on lying scale was 17.04 points. Conclusions: The results indicate a low level of oral health behavior among examined population. Furthermore they are proof of existence of large needs for dental prophylaxis and treatment.
