Title: Clinical symptomatology and family perception dynamic in patients with eating disorders – follow-up study

Abstract:

The goal of such longitudinal study was to analyze changes over time in eating disorders symptomatology and family relationships as well as to identify predictors of good outcome.The research group constituted of former patients diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia nervosa. All patients have been tested twice. Initial testing was performed at the beginning of clinical treatment andthe follow-up testing was done an average, 6.8 years later. The following questionnaires were used: The Eating Disorder Inventory, The Family Assessment Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Family of Origin Scale, interview, diagnostic scale.Low score in Ineffectiveness and Acceptance of loss and separation are predictors of a good outcome in eating disorders. Patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa restricting type have the best outcome. Drive for thinness, Body dissatisfaction, Interceptive awareness, Maturity fear, Interpersonal distrust decreased in the course of eating disorders, but not differ between groups with good or bad outcome. Results of the study also revealed that Closeness in family decreased, however autonomy remains unchanged. Interestingly, the family relationships dynamics differ in diagnostic groups. Patients with anorexia nervosa restrictive type changed their attitudes towards family members from idealistic to more critical one. Similarly, patients with anorexia nervosa bulimic type displayed worse attitudes towards family over time.
