Abstrakt:

In the present study, the serum concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, tissue VDR expression as well as serum polyunsaturated fatty acids of phospholipids fraction and tissue COX-2 expression as potential markers of colorectal cancer were analyzed. The study group included 39 patients with colorectal cancer (23 men and 16 women), mean age 65,5 ± 6,8 years. They were at different stages of the disease. Moreover the tumor was located in the proximal part or in distal part of colon or in the rectum. The control group consisted of 25 patients (mean age 51,0 ± 6,9 years; 8 men and 17 women) without gastrointestinal diseases and without neoplasm.According to the results, the serum level of 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol cannot be used as a marker of colon cancer localization in the intestine as well as it cannot be used to assess the stage of the disease or disease progression. It is suggested that anti-tumor effect of vitamin D depends on VDR expression, thus, the assessment of vitamin D status in patients with colorectal cancer should include VDR expression in tumor tissue. Serum level of unsaturated fatty acids of phospholipids fraction (C18:2, C20:4, C18:3, C20:5, C22:6), and COX-2 expression in tumor tissue in colorectal cancer patients depend on the stage of the disease. Vitamin D inhibits COX-2 expression in tumor tissue of patients with elevated VDR expression.
