Title: Self-evaluation of stigmatization and discrimination experienced by patients diagnosed with HIV and AIDS from medical personnel

Introduction: Review of literature on this subject reveals the presence of stigmatization and discrimination of patients diagnosed with HIV and AIDS by medical personnel in Poland. Goal of study: To evaluate the relationship between patient and medical personnel from the time the patient is informed about the diagnosis of HIV, to evaluate the progress of their relationship as the patient is being treated and to answer the question if the character of this relationship influences the quality of life of the patient. Material and method : Two groups of patients were asked to answer a questionnaire: the experimental group with the diagnosis of HIV/ AIDS and a control group diagnosed with HCV making a total of 160 patients. The study was carried out at two out-patient clinics in University Hospital in Kraków. Result: Results from the study carried out showed insufficient knowledge among some doctors and nurses about HIV and its transmission. It also revealed that they were unable to give professional advice and education on the subject of HIV. Patients were refused medical services and were treated worse than before the diagnosis was given. The diagnosis of HIV impacted negatively on the state of mind of patients and led to a decrease in their quality of life. Conclusion: The study carried out showed the presence of stigmatization and discrimination towards HIV-infected patients as ; soon as their serological status were known. Stigma and discrimination as well as being infected with the , virus itself considerably decreased their quality of life in many basic aspects.
