Title: Anaerobic metabolism of sulfur in selected tissues of animalsexposed to lead, cadmium and mercury ions

Abstract:

Heavy metal ions related pathologies are a direct result of theoxidant effect of lead, cadmium and mercury on tissues and cellularcomponents, the diminished level of available sulfhydryl antioxidantreserves in the body, mainly GSH. Cys is one of substrates in thesynthesis of GSH and may also undergo nonoxidative desulfurationthat produces sulfane sulfur-containing compounds. Examiningchanges of nonoxidative metabolism of Cys and the level of Cys andGSH in brain, liver, kidney, heart, testicles and skeletal muscle of frog(P.ridibundus, X.laevis, X.tropicalis) exposed to Pb(NO3)2 (28 mg/l),HgCl2 (1,353 mg/l) i CdCl2 ·2,5H2O (40 mg/l) during 10 days was oneof an aimof the experiment.The activity and expression of sulfurtransferases (TST, MPST,CTH), expression of genes encoding selected antioxidative enzymes(SODCyt, SODMit, Cat, GPx i TxnRd) and level of MDA in allselected tissues was examined in frog tissues homogenate.Based on the results it should be noted that the changes caused bythe presence of lead, mercury and cadmium ions induce in allexamined tissues oxidative stress that contribute to changes in sulfurmetabolism by influence to change activity and/or expression ofsulfurtransferases. Changes in gene expression in response tooxidative stress confirmed a role and significance of sulfurtransferasesand/or sulfane sulfur in antioxidative processes.
