The study evaluates the role of measurements of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and albumine and NGAL to creatine (UACR, uNGAL/uCr) markers obtained in the morning urine sample in early diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD).The study comprises 55 Type 2 diabetic patients (DM t2) aged 18 and over. The data were compared against a group of 22 non-diabetic individuals. Statistically, uNGAL/uCr is much higher in the DM t2 group. uNGAL/uCr and UACR is significantly higher in women and patients with DM t2 and cardiovascular complications. In the DM t2 group, the patient’s age and HbA1c are independent predictive factors for the concentration of uNGAL and uNGAL/uCr. uNGAL and uNGAL/uCr are clinically useful, early, changing dynamically in time, non-invasive DKD indicators, specific for renal tubule damage. The RAA blockade and statin treatment have no influence on the functioning of kidney tubules in DM t2 assessed by uNGAL and uNGAL/uCr.Leucocyturia limits the utility of uNGAL in DKD diagnosis.
