Title: The use of selected laboratory and clinical parameters in predictingprognosis and treatment efficacy in patients with acute myeloidleukemia

Abstract:

The object of this paper is a retrospective analysis of the results oftreatment with patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, divided into groups of individuals of less than 60 and of more than 60years of age, in function of the selected clinical and laboratoryparameters. The second analysed issue was the impact of theintensified chemotherapy, associated with the hematopoietic stem cellstransplantation, on the final outcome with respect to the survival of thepatients, depending on the selected clinical and laboratory parameters. The third problem consisted in a comparison of the results of theintensive therapy and the best supportive care (BSC) in the group ofpatients aged more than 60.The examined group was composed of 161 patients whounderwent diagnostics and therapy at the Service of Hematology andInternal Diseases of the L. Rydygier Specialised Hospital during theyears 2005-2011, with the diagnosed AML.During the period comprised in the analysis (2005-2011) in the groupof patients affected by AML and aged below 60 treated with anintensive chemotherapy, 47% patients achieved total remission. Theevaluation of the specific years with respect to the CR index in thatgroup of patients revealed a growth trend in the years 2009, 2010 and2011: 71.4%, 83% and 57%, respectively. In the group of patientsaffected by AML aged more than 60 treated with an intensivechemotherapy the a ; verage index of CR for the entire period includedin the analysis totalled 33% and showed a tendency to grow in theyears 2010 and 2011 - 55.5% and 50%, respectively. There was an improvement of indicators in patients receiving autoandallo-transplantations. In the group of patients above 60 years ofage intensive treatment influenced significantly improvement of totalsurvival time – 20% in comparison with the group treated only bycytoreduction or BSC – 0%.
