Title: The relationship between temperament and emotion regulation strategies in subjects with depressive and anxiety disorders. A longitudinal study

Abstract:

The difficulties associated with the adaptive and functional regulation of emotions are characteristic for many, if not for all mental disorders. Emotional acceptance on the one hand and emotional suppression on the other hand, have been the most frequently investigated emotion regulation strategies in recent years. Thereby, existing studies usually did not differentiate between emotion regulation for negative and positive emotions. Temperament appears as the mediator, modeling the relationship between both variables (regulation of emotion and depressive and anxiety symptoms). The presented thesis is based on a clinical study that was conducted in the German Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Bethel in Bielefeld. The aim of the study was to investigate 1) the emotion regulation dynamics during the course of illness and 2) the relationship between temperament and emotion regulation strategies. The research was conducted as a longitudinal, clinical study. The subjects were 76 patients and 29 healthy controls. The Beck-Depression-Inventory and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory were used to assess the depressive-anxiety symptoms. Emotion regulation was assessed by Fragebogen zur Akzeptanz von Gefühlen and Skalen zum Emotionalen Erleben. The Temperament-Character-Inventory (TCI) was used to assess the subjects’ temperament. There were significant differences in both, level of sympt ; oms and the emotion regulation strategies between the clinical group and the control group. The higher suppression and the lower acceptance of positive and negative emotions is related to the psychopathology of patients. Emotion acceptance and emotion suppression are related to several temperamental factors.
