Abstrakt:

The aim of the work was the assessment of usefulness of radiological examination (pantomography and CT scan) in lower wisdom tooth (LWT) surgery. The study was performed on 120 partially retained LWT qualified to extraction because of orthodontic reason. Moreover, the LWT roots in pantomogram projected onto the mandibular canal. Therefore, in 60 patients additionally CT was performed.The study group was subdivided into two groups:- group "P" included patients with 60 LWT (1-60) qualified for the extraction after pantomography,- group "T" included patients with 60 LWT (61-120) qualified for the extraction after pantomography and CT.The use of CT scan allows for precise spatial evaluation of the location of the LWT in relation to the mandibular canal, which is not possible using pantomogram alone. CT scan enables verification of false-positive results of pantomography, suggesting contact of LWT roots with the mandibular canal, allowing more accurate determination of the risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage.The application of CT scan and based on it choice of appropriate surgical technique decreases the occurrence of the damage to the inferior alveolar nerve.
