Abstract:

The main aims of the study were to evaluate the efficiency of hypertension treatment in the group of patients aged 65 years and older treated for hypertension and assess the factors influencing blood pressure control, with the special interest put into cognitive function and mood screening assessment. In the framework of the Pol-Fokus study we did a cross-sectional survey of 2500 patients who had been treated for hypertension at general or specialized clinics for at least one year, and who were 65 years of age or older (data available for 1988 patients). The survey was representative at the national level. In all patients we performed a screening assessment of cognition (with the AMTS and CDT), and mood (with GDS). Forty five percentb of both men and women in the entire group had adequate blood pressure control. In the multiple logistic regression modeling, the poorer results of screening assessment of cognition or mood were significantly related to greater risk of detecting coexisting poor blood pressure control.
