Title: Evaluation of dendritic cells in cutaneous lymphomas

Abstract:

Primary cutaneous lymphomas often feature different clinical course and prognosis compared to systemic lymphomas. Dendritic cells may play a role in the pathogenesis of cutaneous lymphomas. The aim of this work was analysis and reclassification of cutaneous lymphomas retrieved from archive of Chair of Pathomorphology and investigation the occurrence and number of dendritic cells in these neoplasms. The analysis included 118 cases of cutaneous lymphomas. Reclassification was conducted in accordance with current classifications. Dendritic cells demonstrating expression of S-100, CD1a, CD207 CD68 were evaluated within tumors’ infiltrate and epidermis. This study demonstrated in primary cutaneous lymphomas a statistically significant higher number of dendritic cells and Langerhans cells within tumors’ infiltrate as well as macrophages and / or plasmacytoid dendritic cells within the epidermis compared to lymphomas secondarily involving skin. These results may confirm the role of dendritic cells in the pathogenesis of cutaneous lymphomas. Indolent lymphoma has shown a statistically significant higher number of dendritic cells and Langerhans cells within tumors’ infiltrate compared to the intermediate and aggressive lymphomas, indicating the impact of the number of dendritic cells in cutaneous lymphomas on their clinical behavior.
