Title: Study on the mechanism of antidepresant-like effect of chromium (III) salt

Abstract:

Chromium as a trivalent compound is used ininsulin-dependent glucose utilization and lipidsmetabolism. Well-balanced diets are capable to cover therequirement of chromium completely. Cr III deficiencycases are extremely rare, but shows the role of thisbioelement in organism. Nevertheless, it is reported thatin United States chromium supplements generates salesfor more than US$100 million annually. The new direction of research of the role ofchromium III is neuropsychopharmacology. ExperimentsZał. nr 1 do § 2 zarządzenia nr 45Rektora UJ z 12 czerwca 2006 rokushow that chromium is able to change levels of neurotransmitters, and casual cases of patients using chromium supplementation demonstrate its benefit role in affective disorders, especially dysthymia and atypical depression. This paper examine the role of glutamatergic and monoaminergic receptors in antidepressant-like action of chromium. Furthermore, the evaluation of anxiolytic-like action of chromium was done. Two behavioral tests were employed: Porsolt’s test in mice and rats, elevated plus maze, and two methods of radioreceptor binding: inhibition and saturation. RESULTS: Chromium III exhibits antidepressant-like effect in a dose-dependent manner. The AMPA, β and D1 receptor signaling is necessary for this activity. Subactive dose of chromium augments antidepressant activity of imipramine, reboxetine and fluoxetine. Chron ; ic treatment with chromium III did not alter of β- or α1-adrenoceptors’ density in frontal rat cortex. No anxiolityc-like action of chromium was noticed.
