Abstract:

Background: There are no publications in Polish and limited in international literature dealing with complex evaluation of the needs of persons with cognitive function disorders and coexisting diseases who are involved in a long-term care.Aim: The aim of this work was to assess the level of psychophysical efficiency in patients with disorders of cognitive functions who are included in a long-term care in Poland.Method and study group: The following standardized research tools were used in this study: the Cognitive Assessment Scale, the Barthel Scale, the Edmonton Functional Assessment Tool and the Observational Scale of Depression and Anxiety. The assessment was performed three times: at the beginning of the care and after three and six months of the stay in a given care providing institution. The study included persons aged above 60 years with disorders of cognitive functions. The study group comprised 80 inhabitants of the long – term care institution and 80 inhabitants of the social welfare home. In both groups females and persons aged between 76-85 prevailed. Results: The analysis of the dynamics of the changes in the assessed areas revealed that mean values in the three consecutive measurements with use of the Cognitive Assessment Scale, the Barthel Scale, the Edmonton Functional Assessment Tool and the Observational Scale of Depression and Anxiety carried out separately fo ; r each of these institutions did not show significant differences. Generally, a 6-month observation disclosed in both institutions more cases of deterioration than improvement of cognitive functions. In the social welfare home fewer persons depicted improvement of their functional and psychological state in terms of tension, anxiety and depression The level of physical mobility was markedly lower in the group of the patients in the long – term care institution than in the social welfare home. Conclusions: The results presented above indicate that persons with disorders of cognitive functions involved in a long-term stationary care show diversified state in terms of psychophysical efficiency not only at different institutions but also within one institution.
