Spinal pain, particularly the lumbar spine pain, constitutes asignificant social problem of the 21st century. Among the etiologicalfactors related to discopathy the leading role is attributed to excessivebody weight. The objective of the work was to assess the role ofexcessive body weight in relation to intensification of the painailments of the spine and reduction of functional capacity of theexamined patients. The research compresed 400 patients sufferingfrom lumbar discopathy. The examinations were conducted twice withthe same patients: before starting the therapy and after the period of 6months of its application. The examination consisted of three parts. The first one was asurvey aimed at collecting important information concerning thecourse of the ailment, socio-demographic data, occupational activityand particular elements of lifestyle. The second part covered the seriesof anthropometric measurements (body mass, height, waist and hipcircumference). In the next phase the assessment of functional capacity impairment of the examined patients was carried out with the application of the Oswestry Disability Index as well as the measurement of the pain intensity was made using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).As a result of performed tests it was stated that three quarters of both examined genders had overweight and obesity constituting respectively 318 patients (78.5%). As consequ ; ence of the conducted educational process after the period of six months, a considerable part of the examined patients reduced their body weight by increasing the intensity of physical activity and changing the diet, which had a positive influence on intensifying the pain ailments and increased functional activity. In the work there were conclusions that body weight differentiated the incidence of lumbar discopathy as well as influenced the intensity of the felt pain and level of the functional capacity.
