Title: Effect of selected exercise on motor performance, anthropometric and antioxidant status of adolescents

Abstract:

Introduction. Motor skills shaped by the physical activity are one of the basic health needs of children and young people, indispensable in their achieving proper physical, motor, mental and social development. Aim of the study. Assessment of the level of motor skills as well as the effects of the used exercise program on the changes of the motor and anthropometric parameters, and also on the selected indicators of antioxidant activity of adolescent youth. Materials and methods. The study group consisted of 133 students (92 women and 41 men) aged from 17 to 19 years old. The first stage assessed the health status of the group, anthropometric measurements, the physical fitness - Eurofit test, and determination of the antioxidant potential (FRAP, SOD, GPX, GST, GSH, MDA) of the blood samples. The second stage of the study, a year after the initial examination, included the re-evaluation of the same parameters as during the first stage. Results. In the first stage, only two person (1 woman and 1 man) of the 133 surveyed students, completed all the tests at least on the 50 percentiles level. In the second stage, the number of students who performed all the exercises above the 50 percentile level significantly increased to 37 (p<0.0001); in 22 women (p=0.00004) and 15 men (p=0.00018). In the scope of anthropometric parameters, among women, an increase of waist circumference (from 69 ; .9 cm to 73 cm, p<0.05 ) and a waist-hip ratio (WHR) (from 0.74 to 0.75, p<0.02) as well as a muscle mass contain (from 41.9 kg to 42.4 kg, p=0.044) and a reduction of subcutaneous fat (from 87.7 mm to 76.8 mm, p<0,0001) was noted. In the group of men, apart of an increase in the waist circumference (from 76.1 cm to 79.6 cm, p=0.05) and WHR (from 0.78 to 0.80, p=0.02), an increase of body mass index (BMI) (from 21.7 kg/m2 to 22.5 kg/m2, p<0.0001) and the percentage increase of body fat (from 11.3% to 13.4%, p=0.001) were observed. Among the antioxidant parameters increase of the total Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) from 1.26 mmol/l to 1.71 mmol/l (p<0.0001) and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) from 12.35 U/g Hb to 13.41 U/g Hb (p=0.005) were observed. Conclusions. 1) The applied fitness program resulted in the significant improvement in motor skills among studied youth. 2) During a year-observation an increase in waist circumference and WHR ratio were observed in the researched group of young people. A gender dissimilarity of other anthropometric parameter changes was noticed. 3) The positive changes of total antioxidant activity are indicated by significant FRAP level and GPX activity between the first and the second examinations.
