Title: Quantitative analysis of fertility of women and men in the United States born between 1958-1987

Abstract:

The socio-economic determinants play an important role in shaping the level of fertility in societies. Determinants like religion, income, education and immigration status, and its influence on fertility are discussed in the thesis. Besides, ethnicity, marital status and age of women and men are analysed as control variables as well. The National Survey of Family Growth and National Vital Statistics Reports were analysed as well as multiple classification analysis and logistic regressions were employed. We found that religion bad a statistically significant impact on number of children and, in addition, more religious women had more children. We also found that duration of first marriage (for women) and number of marriages (men) explained the differences in number of live births between religious people and atheist. Results showed that adult income equivalent was proportional to number of intended children as well as the control variables like age, education, duration of first marriage and live births explained the differences in number of intended children across income groups. Moreover, immigrant women postponed fertility if they are going to immigrate to USA and the pattern was observed across all age-groups. The fertility of immigrant women was determined by length of immigration. Finally, level of education determined fertility significantly.
