Title: The influence of critical condition on the quality of patients' life after the treatment in the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract:

The retrospective study includes 67 patients who survived a critical condition. Most of them are the patients after cranocerebral and multiorgan injuries, sudden circulatory arrest due to cardiac causes, serious poisonings, cerebral haemorrhages and strokes; the patients were treated in the Intensive Care Unit in Jarosław.The main aim of this study was to assess the quality of life after surviving acritical condition, to compare it in the 6thand the 12thmonth after an incident and to examine how such factors as functional condition, patients' age, sex, education, place of residence and causes of a critical condition influence the assessment. In direct contact all patients were evaluated with the Sickness-Impact Profile (SIP) standard questionnaire and Zung Depression Scale was used to assess their emotional condition. Likert scale was used to evaluate family support. Additionally, patients' functional independence in everyday activities was measured with the Barthel Index. The reference group consisted of patients from a family medicine centre without chronic diseases, who had not been hospitalized for the previous two years. The research was carried out in the 6th and the 12th month after surviving a critical condition. What is more, the results were compared with those in the reference group.
