Title: Carbohydrate metabolism disturbances and insulin sensitivity evaluation in alcohol - addicted men with withdrawal syndrome

Abstract:

The risk of impaired fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes gradually decreases to the level seen in moderate drinkers and increases in persons consuming larger amounts of alcohol. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of withdrawal syndrome in alcohol-dependent men on disturbances in the carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity.The study group comprised 88 alcohol-addicted men aged 21- 50 years, with withdrawal syndrome. All persons were tested for blood alcohol, glucose and insulin levels on admission and during OGTT.The control group consisted of 89 men, declared alcohol consumption of not more than 40 grams per drinking day and not more often that 0- 4 times per week.Diabetes was observed in 10.23% and hypoglycemia in 11.36% participants from study group. Insulin resistance assessed in 0 min. and 120 min. of OGTT and based on HOMA-IR index was detected in about 20% of addicted men from the study group.The risk factors of type 2 diabetes in the study group included: the duration of alcohol consumption prior to admission (OR = 1.01), the intensity of withdrawal symptoms according to CIWA-Ar. scale (OR = 1.59). BMI was a protective factor (OR = 1.38).BMI was a risk factor of fasting insulin resistance and insulin resistance based on HOMA-IR index in both alcohol- addicted group and control.
