Abstrakt:

The aim of this study was to present depression in its medical, social and economic context. Results of my own investigations as well as a review of recent publications emphasise the enormous impact this disease can have on the everyday life of patients, their families and the health care system. In the theoretical sections of thesis (Chapters one to six) methodological issues and scientific background are discussed. In Chapters 7 and 8 the results of the author’s studies are described, presenting the problems of depressive disorders within public health approach. The six following analyses relate to issues of the market of antidepressant drugs in Poland; the pharmacoeconomics of depression; the burden of depression in DALY units; the costs of depression in macroeconomic scale; the quality of live and evaluation of general health status (EQ5D questionnaire) for patients with diagnosed depression; utilised resources in outpatient department and demographic characteristics of patients treated for depression.
