The study demonstrates the non-invasive and selective delivery of a gene of human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) using non-viral vector (plasmid) to rat myocardium using ultrasound targeted microbubbles destruction techinque (UTMD). Expression of delivered gene was restricted to the UTMD targeted organ. There was a significant increase in arteriolar density in animals, that received control plasmid with luciferase gene. This finding is probably due to non-specific effects of UTMD on microcirculation and expression of genes that promote arteriogenesis. The exact molecular mechanism of this phenomenon together with the impact of UTMD- stimulated arteriogenesis on coronary blood flow remains to be determined.
