Title: The role of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service as a part of medical response system in Małopolska Region
Abstract:
Study was based on analysis of 85 260 calls for Emergency Medical Service assistance that occurred in Malopolska Region in 2002. Detailed analysis of 3 chosen Advanced Life Support (ALS) units was provided. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) as a part of the regional response system. Comparing with ground units statistics of 1 631 HEMS missions was studied. ALS units and HEMS missions were analysed by the type of calls, mission characteristics and medical procedures provided. Missions were categorised in two groups. Primary missions and secondary missions (intra-facility transfers). In both categories, additionally operational times of missions were studied. Results of study show that average number of life threatening situations were 30% of all ALS units and HEMS missions. Characteristics of HEMS calls show still large space for expanding air rescue involvement in regional response system. Implementing of dispatch procedures can reduce the number of non-urgent calls for ALS units and optimise the cooperation with HEMS. In conclusion emergency medical helicopters are effective part of response system as well in primary and secondary missions. In rural areas their use might be more efficient then in case of ground units. Similar experience comes from secondary missions study. For better planning and appropriate use of ALS ; and HEMS units universal criteria should be established. Another field for improvement is the dispatch system it can be reached by implementing of command-control softwere and Global Positioning System.
