The aims of the examination was the assessment of the knowledge about asthma management in adults before beginning the specialty training in family medicine and implementing the guidelines of asthma for family physicians (first assessment) and after four years (second assessment). The level of the change was analysed, personal and professional features that influenced the level of knowledge and change of the level of it. The polish version of the “International Questionnaire on Asthma Management” was used to evaluation. The correct answers were established on the basis of the guidelines. The assessed group consisted of 111 physicians from primary health care (54%- internists, 34% pediatrics, 29% other specializations). The first level of knowledge was the lowest in the general principles of treatment (42% of compatibility with the guidelines), the highest in pharmacotherapy (65% of compatibility with the guidelines). Age and internal medicine were correlated positively with the level of knowledge in the first assessment. In the second assessment the average improvement for the whole questionnaire was 12%; the highest- 15,4% of increase in the field of patients education, the lowest in pharmacotherapy- 8,4% of increase. The number of medical magazines read was correlated positively with the level of knowledge in the second assessment. The improvement higher than average correlat ; ed positively with long term medical practice, a greater number of duty hours in hospitals, lower assessment of knowledge in the firs questionnaire.
