Title: The usefulness of calcium score in evaluation of coronary arteries atherosclerotic lesions

Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of calcium score measured by multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) in predicting coronary stenosis; to establish the relationship between total calcium score (CS) and coronary risk factors: arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking, predisposing family history, age and sex; to identify individual differences in the course of coronary artery disease in men and women taking into account the value of total calcium score. The study population consisted of 340 consecutive patients, 222 men and 118 women, mean age 59,7±9,38 years. The study revealed that coronary artery calcium score was a valuable parameter in predicting coronary stenoses. The value of total calcium score increased with the number of stenosed coronary arteries. The absence of coronary calcium (CS=0) excluded the presence of significant stenosis with a high probability (93.5%- negative predictive value). The risk factors had an impact on the severity of coronary calcification. CS was gender-dependent. The process of coronary calcification was more advanced in men than women in all age groups, which was correlated with delayed progression of the plaque on coronary angiography.
