Title: Weather conditions and incidence of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage


The influence of meteorological factors on aneurysmal SAH is still unexplained. The aim of the study is to examine the weather conditions on the area of south-eastern Poland at the time of the incidence of aneurysmal SAH, as well as to determine if there is a relationship between the weather factors and SAH incidence and what are the most significant factors that affect this type of stroke. The study covers 464 patients with aneurysmal SAH, hospitalised in Neurosurgical Department of University Hospital, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University from December 1st, 1998 to December 31st, 2002. The patients came from the area of 5 weather stations. The following weather parameters were analysed: air temperature, atmospheric pressure, circulation, fronts and seasonal variation in the incidence. The aim of the research was to compare the weather conditions on the day of the SAH onset, the day and two days before to the conditions recorded two weeks earlier respectively. The case-crossover method was applied. The risk of SAH is increased by the following factors: high temperature in spring and low in autumn, drop of atmospheric pressure, high from the south, as well as cold front and a few fronts on the days before the onset. The peak of the incidence occurred in transitional months such as May, June, October and November. So far no single factor significant for the rupture of cere ; bral aneurysm has been found. Weather conditions constitute one of many factors that can play a role in the whole process. The results of the study can help to assess a possible number of SAH patients to be admitted to neurosurgical departments.
