Abstract:

Previous research from 2000 to 2005 presents the psychosocial determinants of illness behaviours among patients with colorectal cancer. For the purpose of this study, illness behaviours signify the actions taken by the patient from the moment of observing first symptoms to the moment of deciding on surgical treatment. A baseline survey was carried out in patients with histopathological confirmation of colorectal cancer. Most illness symptoms were perceived as mild. Patients sought help and support mostly through family members. When describing symptoms, patients often related them to a previous life style, especially concerning nutritional habits. Fighting their illness was based on faith in a sure recovery, positive examples, advice, and support from family. Patients tried to find not only the reasons for their illness, but also tried to establish who or what was responsible for their illness. Going to the doctor did not always insure an accurate diagnosis and/or easy treatment. Criticisms which patients directed towards their doctors and nurses were centred on: treating the patients as an object/thing, too little information about their illness, uncertainty about the diagnosis, and lack of trust in their physician.
