Tytuł: Social networks of people with affective disorders
Abstrakt:
The purpose of the research was to analyse the structure of social networks as well as types and sources of support received by patients with unipolar and bipolar disease. The group of patients examined in the research consisted of outpatients after hospitalization in the Depression Treatment Ward of Psychiatry Clinic, with a diagnosis of unipolar or bipolar affective disorder (40 patients in each group). The control group consisted of volunteers of sex and age corresponding to the case group. It has been shown that the structure and functioning of social networks of people diagnosed as having affective disorders differs from the ones of healthy people. In general the networks of the form er function worse. Patients with unipolar disorder do not mention many people of their environment as significant or providing support. They devote less time to social life. Most of support they obtain from family members, and all supportive functions often lie with one person. These patients have a sense of receiving a small amount of mainly emotional support. Patients with bipolar disorder have social networks characterized by the structure and activity comparable with that of healthy people. But also in this case there is often only one person who carries the whole burden of support. When compared to the control group these patients also receive less support, and again the emotional support ; is the most deficient. It seems that a combined therapy of affective disorders should include not only pharmacotherapy and various kinds of psychotherapy but also ought to take structure and functioning of patients' social networks into consideration.
