Abstract:

In this study we assessed the prevalence and control of arteria) hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia and identified the factors influencing blood pressure and lipid management in patients treated due to the first manifestation of coronary artery disease as in-patient and out-patient in district hospitals. We also assessed influence of the comprehensive cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation program on hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia control. The study was a part of the European Society of Cardiology project EUROACTION. The study population was 255 patients (men and women) ⩽ 80 years presenting for the first time as in-patient and out-patient with consultant diagnosis of coronary heart disease. We have found a high prevalence of arteria) hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia in study population. Management of those risk factors, although better than in general population, stili remains unsatisfactory. We have shown that management of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia depends on baseline status of those risk factors as well as on baseline glucose level. Participation in cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation program increases control of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia at sixteen weeks, but this effect decreased over one year follow-up.
