Abstract:

The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of a social phobia in the non-treated population of adolescents in an early phase of adolescence and an attempt to describe a qualitative profile of the disorder and its comorbidity with depression in the Polish population. Materiał and methods: The group comprised 115112-year-old pupils. The following tools were used in the study: Social Phobia and Anxiety lnventory for Children and the questionnaire Krakowski Inwentarz Depresyjny (KIO). Rcsults: The mean value for total SPAI-C for boys and girls was 7,47±7,03 and 9,32±8,23, respectively (p<0,001). The screening diagnosis of a social phobia was established in 9,6% adolescents and the diagnosis of depression in 23,8% adolescents while the symptoms of a social phobia and depression wcre recognized in 5,7% adolescents. Depression increases the risk of a social phobia and social phobia increases the risk of depression The scores indicating a social phobia wcre 7,5% in boys and 12,1% in girls (p = 0,012). In a factor analysis four factors were distinguished. The factors obtained for the whole group and the group of girls were the following: I. assertiveness, li. fear of social meetings, III. fear of public speaking, N. avoiding social situations. In the group of boys factor IV was termed a fear of conversation. Conclusions: A screening diagnosis of a social phobia was estab ; lished in almost 10% of adolescents. Social phobia is more prevalent in girls than in boys. In 12-year-old adolescents the prevalence of a social phobia is much lower than the prevalence of depression and in most cases occurs with depression. The factor analysis of the items of SPAI-C gave a four-factor solution. The analyscs of the main components and of a multiple regression provide more arguments in favor of the existence of the common area of the symptoms that are measured by means of the SPAI-C and KIO IO"BI" questionnaires.
