Abstract:
The Cracow Doctors' Association was established in 1866. The association was established to advance the knowledge of Polish doctors through the exchange of experience, to advertise Polish doctors research abroad, and to volunteer in the territory of Galicia. Doctors of certain specialities gathered in groups called commissions. In this association there were numerous commissions, some of which resolved small problems, and some established laws or small projects. They were called transient commissions. Others called long lasting commissions were working through many years, and they were responsible for specific branches of medicine and large amounts of scientific research conducting. One of the biggest and the most important long lasting commission was Balneology Commission (existed from 1877 to 1889). It was responsible for preparing chemical analysis of mineral water sources and other medicines used in balneotherapy. It was also responsible for chemical analysis of drinking water, protecting the environment on the spas territory, establishing meteorological stations and presenting the results of it's own balneology research. It's social work consisted of helping modernize spas and promoting them around the country and abroad, helping poor people to have access to spa treatment, and raising the comfort of spa treatment. The Balneology Commission also organized balneological exh ; ibitions at medical congresses and settled disputes among members. The best known spas like: Krynica, Żegiestów, Truskawiec, Szczawnica, Krzeszowice profited from the help of this commission.
