Abstract:

The aim of this dissertation was in vitro and in vivo evaluation of a direct effect of two bleaching agents containing 10% and 20% carbamide peroxide on teeth enamel. In the experimental part the effect of bleaching agents on the teeth colour, microstructure, elemental composition, microhardness and chemical structure of the enamel were evaluated. The second part of the study was a clinical evaluation of the efficiency, comfort of treatment and side effects of teeth bleaching by nightguard method. For in vitro studies 30 non-carious human molars and premolars were used. The study revealed a very good efficiency of bleaching and showed that applied products did not have an impact on microstructure, microhardness and chemistry of the enamel. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that bleaching agents did not influence a mineral phase of both enamel and dentin. The clinical research involved 55 patients at the age ranging from 20 to 56 years. The total bleaching time was 14 days. The clinical efficiency and percentage of the side effects (teeth hypersensitivity) were comparable for both products. Patients’ evaluations of the bleaching agents and whitening process were very positive.
